Engine Induction System

The purpose of the induction system of the engine is to bring atmospheric air into the engine cylinders to mix it with fuel for the combustion process. During the passage of air to the engine cylinder, the air must be purged of any dirt and foreign bodies that may cause internal damage to the finely machined internal parts of the engine. The point in the induction process at which the air and fuel are mixed varies, depending on the nature of the engine fueling system. In fuel carburetor engines, the air and fuel are mixed at the point where the air inlet tract passes across the fuel jet openings of the carburetor; this actually occurs within the body of the carburetor and upstream from the inlet manifold.
